On a Saturday afternoon in June, our friend and neighbor, Melissa Gardiner, organized a 2nd Line Brass marching band to celebrate Make Music Day for the City of Syracuse in the Near Westside.
The band started playing in Skiddy Park surrounded by regular park activity, attracting onlookers in cars and on bike and foot. The band and gathering of supporters then proceeded on a parade route through the surrounding neighborhood creating an unexpected spectacle of musical celebration.
Neighbors along the route came out to see and listen to the entertainment and some reconnected with band members who they recognized and knew. It was a fun and unusual event to take part in, something that exemplifies the interesting, eclectic and changing neighborhood we live in here in the Near Westside.
