Lead Mentor: Nick Lisi


Lisi worked at The Post-Standard for 26 years and has taught photography for 22 years at the college level. He currently teaches high school media students at the Institute of Technology at Syracuse Central.

Participant: Ardena Harvey


Harvey is an aspiring entrepreneur, single parent and recent graduate of Syracuse University raising two young and determined teenagers.

Mentor: Bill Storm


Storm leads professional workshops covering photography, video, as well as expert education in audio for Media Arts Workshops.

Participant: Ceikaiyia Cheeks

Cheeks is a Corcoran High School student & wants to become a film director. Last year, she made two short films: “The Outbreak” & “Ring of Death.”

Mentor: Nick DeRocha

DeRocha is working as an intern for WCNY this summer.

Participant: Eurain Scott

Scott is a high school student at the Institute of Technology at Syracuse Central and lives with his grandmother on Geddes Street. He would like to be able to tell a story about overcoming obstacles, working hard and doing positive things when there’s negativity surrounding him.

Mentor: Bob Gates

Gates is a professional photographer. His photos have been displayed in exhibits throughout CNY galleries and published widely in such magazines as National Geographic Traveler, PhotoLife (Canada), The Photo Review, Popular Photography, The Best of Photography Annual, f-stop magazine and many more.

Participant: Dale Harp

Harp is a published author – “The Day My Dawgs Ran,” which he wrote while incarcerated. He wants to share his personal stories about going down the wrong path to show youth how to make better choices.

Mentor: Mike Greenlar

Greenlar  has worked as a photography at The Post-Standard for more than a decade and documented in photos the charcoal industry in Haiti, apartheid in South Africa, a three-generation traditional Algonquin family in the Canadian bush and most recently post-war Laos. “Even after all my travels,” Greenlar says, “I have to admit the best pictures are still near my home.”

Participant: Martha Chavis-Bonner

Chavis-Bonner is a resident of Syracuse Housing and grandmother to 16. She serves as an advocate for Upstate Hospital and wants to participate to increase knowledge about positive things happening in the community and resources available.

Mentor: Charles Curran

Curran is working as an intern for WCNY this summer.

Participants: The Rothwells



Karaline and Isaac Rothwell are a family of three with their two-year-old son Quincy. They are a Christian family that believes firmly that God has a mission for them in the Near Westside community.

Mentor: Allison Gates

Gates works as a photographer for Event Photography Group. Last year she won the grand prize in the LightCollector Photo Contest.

Participant: Tamara Reese

Reese says even though she was raised in a unsafe neighborhood, her family never become a statistic. During this project, she wants to tell the stories of her South Side family's accomplishments.

Mentor: Marilu Lopez Fretts

Lopez Fretts works as a freelance photographer and multimedia producer.

Participant: Brenda Muhammad

Muhammad is a consummate community volunteer seeking to serve the community as a true community conduit.

Additional Mentor: Jason Kohlbrenner

Kohlbrenner works at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications as Supervisor of Production Operations. He spends his daylight hours troubleshooting problems in Final Cut Prof, Avid & the Adobe Suite of program. He can also be found tinkering with video, super-8, web and the Syracuse arts community.
